2008 AIDS TB Disability Action

In January 2008 Barrydale Health and Welfare Committee (BHWC) organised and faciliated a series of activities focusing on HIV/AIDS and the emerging linked crisis of TB in our district as well as disability issues in general. We believe this action provided the catalyst for ongoing education and information sharing. The theme "Keep the Promise" linked us as a local community to the global thematic of being vigilant to governments' the world over to facilitate and provide for the healthcare of those living with HIV infection, disease and AIDS as well as TB. 17th Thursday :10am Special Talk for the Aged : Shane Petzer Ashoka Fellow was special guest

  7pm Talent Evening "Idols" Style

  VGK Kerk, Smitsville Landi Jas was the Winner

18th Friday 7pm Modelling Evening "Back to School with a Vision" A packed VGK Kerk in

  Smitsville saw 300 participants revel in excitement.

19th Saturday AIDS Parade and March through the Streets of Barrydale with jubilant

  Speeches, Flags, Banners, Dancers, Drummers. Halfway along the march route,

  activists participated in a Tree Planting Ceremony. Later on in the afternoon,

  special VIP guests from accross the district joined Village AIDS activists in

  addressing Marchers at the Parade end at the Rugby Field in Smitsville

20th Sunday AIDS Candlelight Service Chaplain Malan SAPS addressed an interdenominational

  Religious Service at at unusually packed VGK Kerk in Smitsville Township,

Event Included: A Community Member and a Special Guest declaring their Public Testimony of

  living with HIV infection.
